About The Book

A Bronx Journey

In the late 1970’s Howell Cosell infamously said, “The Bronx is Burning.” The Bronx came to symbolize urban decay. Economic decline, disinvestment, redlining and racial tensions contributed to a crumbling infrastructure, poverty and rampant arson of its buildings, giving it the appearance of a war zone. At the same time, it was also creating rap music and break dancing. During that period, Robert Danville Jr. dreamed of moving from the poorest county in New York – Bronx County to its richest county – Westchester County. Although they are neighboring counties, they seem to be miles apart. Robert often sees the commuter train connecting the two counties pass through his neighborhood. He dreams of escaping poverty and being a commuter on this train. To Robert living in Westchester symbolizes “success” until life experiences changed his thinking.
